Allegany Museum: The Crossroads of American History America’s history is rooted in Cumberland, a unique city in Western Maryland. The Allegany Museum weaves together stories of exploration and transportation at this crossroads between the East Coast and the great American West. Washington spent significant time in the Cumberland area. At age 16, in 1748, he came in search of the origin of the Potomac River. In his early twenties he led troops from Fort Cumberland to join the French and Indian War. In 1794, as President and Commander in Chief, he returned a fifth and final time to put down the Whiskey Rebellion. Celebrate Washington in Cumberland at our annual Whiskey Rebellion Fest, the second Friday of September.
